About Peata - The Irish Organisation for Pets and People
Peata takes its name from the Irish word for pet. It is a voluntary association established in 1996. It’s main objectives are to provide a pet visiting service as therapy to caring units and to promote an awareness of the benefits people derive from pets. It works to further the understanding of the relationship between people and pets. A Pet is not just for life, it is for a Healthier & Happier Life.
What's Involved
Are you and your dog interested in becoming a Peata visiting team? As a PEATA volunteer you will make regular visits to nursing homes and hospitals sharing with the residents the pleasure and benefits of your dog's company. You will bring your own dog to visit the residents. At the moment we can only accept visitors with pet dogs.
Peata's aim is to promote awareness of the benefits people derive from pets, to encourage the use of residential pets in institutions and to further the understanding of the relationship between people and pets.
**Pets are assessed for their suitability to the service. 20 Euro membership is mandatory and this will cover volunteer insurance.
What is Pet Therapy?
Pet Therapy is a term used to describe the use of companion animals in various clinical, therapeutic and remedial situations.
Pets have been shown to benefit our health and well-being. Pet Therapy is being used worldwide to great effect in Nursing Homes, Long Stay Hospitals, Hospices, Mental & Physically Impaired Facilities, Day Care Centres, Special Needs Schools. Peata introduced this medically supported service to Ireland in 1996.
Experience has shown that pets are a boost to patients, residents and staff’s well-being and help to create a more homely atmosphere in Caring Units.
